The TTOC hosted yet another splendid event, The awards were well structured and very efficiently timed.  Kudos to Mr Brian Lewis and Olympian Jehue Gordon on well delivered speeches.

I am writing this article though to express my disgust at what I saw unfold when announcing the Sportsman of the Year Award. In years prior, the TTOC bestowed this award on the athlete who has accomplished the most in the calendar year. Why in 2015 was this different ? Is it because he is a Para Athlete and not a ''abled bodied'' athlete.  Are his achievements not on the same playing field as his ''human'' counterparts ?

Akeem Stewart won 2 Pan Am GOLD MEDALS, in different events..  he finished 3rd and 4th at the World Championships and also broke the World Record.   The Sportsman of the Year recipient Machel Cedenio finished 7th in the 400m at the World Championships and won a relay silver medal.   Who was the selection panel of the TTOC Awards ? were they all related to Ray Charles cause even a blind man can see one athletes stats outweighed the other.   Maybe if Akeem Stewart's name was Richard Thompson or  Marc Burns he would have been awarded the award. Tell me this .. if Thompson placed 3rd in the 100m and 4th in the 200m at the World Championships, would he have lost the Sportsman of the Year Award like Akeem did ? I'm 100 % certain he wouldn't.

This article is not meant in any way to say Cedenio isn't deserving of an award as he truly had a magnificent year.  Sports Personality of the Year would have suited him more.

As I come to a close, I ask fans to look at the stats i provided above and compare them to previous years where stats determined who won the Sportsman of the Year. Why was 2015 different ? because he was a Para Athlete ? A change needs to come TTOC. !!!

Almost one year later at the 2016 Paralympic Games, Akeem Stewart once again showed his class by becoming the Paralympic Champion in the Javelin Event and winning the silver medal in the Discus event. Will his achievements this time be judged on a level playing field or will he yet again be sidelined by the able bodied athletes ? Only time will tell.

Being disabled should not mean being disqualified from having access to every aspect of life.” Emma Thompson

What I learned was that these athletes were not disabled, they were superabled. The Olympics is where heroes are made. The Paralympics is where heroes come.” Joey Reiman
